Ballast fouling inspection and quantification with ground penetrating radar (GPR)

چکیده
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has been applied for ballast layer inspection two decades, mainly the analysis of fouling levels. However, some issues that affect quality remain unsolved, such as involving GPR equipment (antenna) and correlation between indicator index. With aim solving these issues, in this paper, we investigated difference results different antennas, data processing technique, indicators level (by signal processing) index (obtained by sieving). The show antenna determines quality. can reflect level, they correlate best with percentage particles passing through a 5 mm sieve size). This study is helpful future modification railway maintenance standards.

GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) into Real World
GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) is one of subsurface sensing technologies, which has been used intensively since 1980s. Due to rapid development of both hardware and software, its possibilities have been considerably extended resulting in widening the area of its applications. While such applications as to detection of buried pipes and cables, archaeology and geology are established category, ne...

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has recently gained a wide acceptance in the archaeological community as a method that can quickly and accurately locate buried archaeological features, artifacts, and important cultural strata in the near-surface. The GPR method has been especially effective in certain sediments and soils between about 20 cm and 5 m below the ground surface, where the targets to ...

GPR senses electrical inhomogeneities, with these manifested, for example, by the electrical contrast of a metal mine in the presence of a far-less-conducting soil background. Of much more difficulty, GPR senses the electrical inhomogeneity caused by a dielectric (plastic) landmine in the presence of soil. Often this contrast is very weak, implying that the landmine GPR signal is very small. Th...

Abstract Ballast fouling in railroad substructure is detrimental to railroad track effectiveness and its structural capacity. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) provides a rapid, effective and continuous approach to assess railroad substructure condition. However, unknown ballast dielectric constant and unclear interface between clean and fouled ballast limit the GPR assessment accuracy. In this st...
